Tech billionaires and their cult
Gatekeeping and gaslighting from All Your Favourites, at places like YC and Sequoia. It’s what’s for dinner.
I don’t think that most people appreciate the scale of implications at hand when we deal with “tech” and its people today.
I think most can wrap their heads around how there are cults, like Effective Altruism for example. I think people can understand that we have a cartel on our hands. I think people know they are not socially responsible in any way. I think people know they don’t care. But less known is how this actually happens and why it hasn’t been addressed.
Just recently, to the shock and dismay of many, Everyone’s Favourite Mosaic Nobody, Marc Andreessen, announced that he was backing funding for a real estate startup called Flow, led by the infamous fraudster Adam Neumann, of WeWork infamy.
Why would he do this? Everyone knows that Neumann is reputationally as charred as the guy who ran the Fyre Festival.
Here’s the thing about WeWork: what Neumann did was run an MLM that happened to be comprised entirely of billionaires, with him on the top. Some would win with his game, some would lose, and at the end of the day real power players like Andreessen came to know that he was One Of Us.
In Silicon Valley, the name of the game is not technology, nor is it changing the world. The name of the game is shuffling money around and seeing who is the most crafty and intelligent, who is really playing the right game that no one mentions, or in other words the metagame. The way winners and losers are decided is by who front-runs the best, who understands the meta, things like that. Idiots who think this is actual normal investment get burned and lose all their money, while psychopaths take it all and win. It’s like a casino without borders.
I can only assume Neumann screwed over all of the right people and won a lot of admiration from other fellow billionaire sociopaths, because that right there is the bottom line for them for why he’s back, even though the public rightly hates him. There’s not much more to it as far as Andreessen is concerned: he’s our guy, why the hell should he care what a bunch of nobodies in the public think?
As for how this is being played? It’s really simple: Neumann’s backers are simply going to vicariously gaslight everyone about the fact through news dissemination on places like Twitter. At the end of the day, their conviction is that Adam Neumann isn’t actually a bad guy. It’s an open secret that many of these people have alts and frequent portions of Twitter concerning topics like rationalism and effective altruism, and so most of their relationships are doubtless parasocial. Andreessen might not even know Neumann that well, but he doesn’t have to, because he already made up his mind. The bottom line about that for you and I is that there will be no conversation. Our opinions do not matter. The public sphere is nothing more than a source of ignorant cancellation and loss, and there couldn’t be anything more to it. There are no diamonds in the rough, nor wisdoms of the crowd, according to these serial gamblers, ironically enough. It’s more of a scam than a gamble for them, anyway, but whatever.
This is how the system has been designed to operate. Algorithms that punish dissent and drive engagement at all costs don’t just outright quash wrongthink – they misrepresent the rules of how notoriety, wealth and fame are actually obtained in this world. Andrew Tate figured out how to crack the code after he got a few Bugattis, and if he can do it, why can’t you? While you’re clicking away or Tweeting or sweating your back off making uploads, you’re legitimising and confirming a system that was designed to keep people like Adam Neumann completely unaccountable to the public, forever. Andreessen knows the best response to the reasoned upset about him is to ignore it, and ignore it he can. There is no court of law they can be brought to. The ‘court’ of public opinion is fake and gay, reserved for jesters like Andrew Tate, who will be joining them soon I gander after he is virtually sentenced to hang in the fake public square by all of the sheep of society who will never be free. The fabric of society continues to be defiled by greedy, narcissistic psychopaths, and the public is too preoccupied with all of these fake internet points and fake conversations to muster up the furor to demand it stop.
These places are not the Internet. They’re far from it. They’re a reservation, a superdome, and they’re designed to contain you while people like Marc Andreessen continues to slosh all of his VC money around in a big pool that has no entry and no exit with the greater world’s economy. They’re there to keep you distracted while Andrew Tate exits following his ‘cancellation’, hundreds of millions of legitimate dollars in hand, to go fund casinos and buy more Bugattis and beat his future wives. None of this shit was ever any more real than all of us allowed it to be. And no, it’s not really making the world a better place. It’s a trail of breadcrumbs at best, with a whole shitload of surveillance capitalism and kickbacks six ways from Sunday that make everything worse. You know, unicorns that don’t even have support email address that you can send to, let alone a hotline. Those are your “billion-dollar companies”.
All real accountability is nonexistent, 404. All of the money and hopes and dreams of earnest people are co-opted into a ruthless cartel of global surveillance capitalism, and if you’re not with it, you are cut off, and you’re out. They don’t fucking care! It’s about them, not you.
But if you have a dream, if you want to actually change the world, you should run far, far away from these people who claim to be doing that in SV, Austin and Miami. They want to use you as pawns, like Adam Neumann. They don’t give a flying rat’s ass about you, I mean honestly they don’t care about anyone really except themselves.
They are far enough along that if you’re not fitting into the eminent structure of millions of JavaScript packages, co-opting of corporate anxieties about liability, narcissistically-named startups that involve domain purchases in the tens of thousands of dollars, and all of the encroaching surveillance capitalism to get your name, face, telephone number and a live video feed of your asshole when you’re taking a shit – if you’re not fitting into that ecosystem, they’re probably never going to care about you anyway. You can’t automate away your life’s work – that’s too good to be true, and it is.
The worst thing about it is that these things are only lies because they have been tainted by the whims of billionaires – if all of the world’s great people weren’t around them, we might actually be living in a better world with things like global employment and banking that works even better than it used to.
We have spent almost 20 years now sending all of our best and brightest risk-takers into a fucking mental meat grinder to line the pockets of dimwitted narcissists who got rich off of a company once and thought that meant they were as smart as Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. These people are fucking demons who walk the earth and everyone needs to stop engaging earnestly with them permanently. I’m one of the most staunchly earnest people around if I do say so myself, so if that’s my take, it must be pretty fucked. We’re stuck in a system they made to mentally imprison us, whether they meant to or not, and it’s a crime against humanity. Put an end to it. Hire the people you want & need. Make the thing you really know needs to exist. Quit financialising things and searching for ways to shove it up these guy’s asses. Something has to give.
